I started noticing outdated leadership when I was a kid, and it had everything to do with gender roles.
The narrative went...
"Because you're a girl, you can't lead." Or maybe you can BUT you absolutely have to be aware of how you're perceived. Don’t be too bold or intimidating.
People will hold you to higher standards.
You're going to have to work triple hard.
It's okay to lead as long as you don't hurt anyone's feelings.
The persistent thought I had was, "That can't be right."
THIS IS STILL MY THOUGHT WHEN I RECOGNIZE OUTDATED LEADERSHIP!
And it seemed like the message was the EXACT opposite for the guys. They were told:
“I have to be demonstrative.”
“I have to be out in front.”
“I have to be arrogant, the loudest mouth in the room, even cocky to get noticed.”
Again, THAT CAN'T BE RIGHT!
Many people believe there are leaders and there are followers...
I call BS on this ridiculous notion!
This is a harmful MYTH that causes so many leaders to bench themselves before even getting into the game!
HERE'S THE TRUTH:
Every single person is a LEADER.
YOU ARE THE LEADER OF YOUR OWN LIFE. YES YOU ARE.
You may have different decision making requirements in the various areas of your life, but DON'T GET IT TWISTED, you're a leader no matter what.
And when a diverse GROUP of leaders learn how to CO-LEAD while honoring their own values and perspectives, the most powerful, creative solutions come forward!
Not just in our work but in our lives!
